課程概述

Constant and repeated target language exposure is important in language acquisition. Learners need to be exposed to target language input until the input can be processed automatically; thus, learning becomes acquisition. Therefore, this course is designed to help learners expose themselves to English as much as possible. In addition to the limited three English-only class hours, learners are strongly encouraged to make regular and continuous after-class contacts to help their English through a variety of activities/assignments. The focus of the in-class activities will be to develop students’ extensive and intensive reading skills through different genres and authentic materials of different themes and topics, help learners use their existing knowledge to express opinions clearly, to think critically and to equip the learners the academic skills for their college work. This course will cover all four language skills, which should be developed simultaneously.

課程目標
- to help learners enjoy reading and become independent readers after the course
- to improve students’ both productive and receptive proficiency
- to develop students’ interest and confidence of using their existing English
knowledge to express clearly and critically
- to raise students’ awareness of the in-/extra-curricular input and make use of the input
- to equip learners the required academic skills for college

課程要求
This course is based on a large amount of in-class work during class hours; therefore, high attendance and class participation is required. In-class discussion, mini-presentation and short written text (after discussion) of the topics on syllabus are regarded as the main structure of this course. Hence, students are expected to take active roles in their learning. Quizzes and examinations are used as a way to help learners be familiar with vocabulary and language usage. The university also requires freshmen to produce three longer essays of more than 250 words and several GEPT exercises each semester. This course is open to student opinions on how to help them learn better. Student suggestions and opinions are considered valuable and thus the course design is open and flexible to future changes based on students’ needs and suggestions. The students will also be asked and directed to the university online resource on the teacher’s request.
